By far the most vexing quirk is that these fantasies accompany all skin-to-skin contact. Or that they’ve got her running for her life. One might think the most irksome characteristic of her alleged “gift” is that said visions are followed by debilitating headaches. The Past, too, although that tends to be less useful, as she can’t change what’s already happened. Miss Evangeline Pemberton can see the Future. ![]()

Although the characters face exploitation in the City, their deterioration is not a result of the City itself (sometimes a site of possibility and hope for African-Americans migrating North) but of the toxic ways in which they interact with the City. Although critics have explored the ways in which the City in Toni Morrison’s Jazz is oppressive, I discuss the oppression of citified tracking as a contradiction of the natural, spontaneous, and wild form that mimics jazz music. This paper presents wildness as an agent that can free African-American characters from the toxic, controlling ‘tracks’ (e.g., rail, subway, exploitative record labels) of the City (Harlem). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And to Boston’s surprise, she’s loving every minute of it-and he’s loving seeing her loosen her chignon and be the admirable, beautiful woman she is. ![]() Embarrassed by her assumptions, rather than lazy beach days, Emily soon finds herself feeding the hungry, and even involved in the search for an AWOL soldier. Never-the-less, the writing was engaging enough, and the story imaginative enough that I managed to read the entire thing. It’s a light read in a ‘sliding doors’ kind of style, that will be entertaining to Kelly devotees but will annoy people like me who can’t help noticing all the historical errors and Kelly myths that underlie and are perpetuated in the story. However, unlike Phelans novel, this one has a much looser attachment to the historical and a much greater reliance on the fictional. Author Nicole Kelly – not a relation – says she’s ‘loved the story of the Kelly gang’ as long as she can remember and writes sympathetically of the Gang in this novel, which, like Phelans is about Glenrowan and the aftermath. ![]() ‘Lament’ continues the trend started by Aidan Phelan last year for Kelly devotees to write historical fiction, rather than attempt the more difficult task of separating facts from fiction and writing the true story. ![]() ![]() ![]() Regarded as one of the ‘Big Four’* in terms of early 20 th century writers of school stories for girls, Brazil is probably the one I know least about – and yet she repays some attention.
